Muelheim an der Ruhr, August 2013 by Trond Lossius and Jan Schacher is a series of audio-visual field recordings presented as “slow cinema.” Devoid of plot and characters, the suburban soundscape takes centre stage.

In each recording the camera captures a fixed view of an outdoor environment, with the microphone prominently featured in the image. The work consists of eleven scenes, with durations varying from 5 to 20 minutes, and a total duration of 2h 10m. Above all eleven scenes are presented as videos. The sound is binaural, and should e listened to over headphones.
The work was first presented as a cinematic installation at KINOKINO Centre for Contemporary Art and Moving Image in Sandnes, Norway as part of the exhibition “This must be the place (pick me up and turn me round (part I)”.

The exhibitions “This must be the place” presented works developed within the framework of Re:place, an artistic research project in collaboration between Bergen Academy of Arts and Design, Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the Grieg Academy, Institute of Music at University of Bergen, funded by the Norwegian Artistic Research Program. The exhibition was also supported by Arts Council Norway.
The project ‘sonozones’ originated within the context of an initiative by the Institute for Contemporary Arts Research of the Zurich University of the Arts. The multi-year regional arts project ‘Urbane Künste Ruhr’ invited the institute and in particular its research initiative ‘Public City’ to set up an artistic research lab in the German town of Mülheim an der Ruhr. In the context of this lab, four separate teams from different artistic disciplines such as fine arts, media arts or performing arts, carried out artistic initiatives. The project shown here is located within and motivated by the perspectives of sound-arts and music.
