Quality

March 15, 2005

Before lunch the new fellows presented their revised project descriptions. Amanda Stegell of Motherboard has been permitted to convert her research project into the framework of the fellowship program and got to hold a more thorough presentation. The subject of her work is MIND THE GAP (synaesthesia and contemporary live art practice). Amanda has found a very nice way of documenting her own work online.

After luncg the quality of artistic works was the topic of presentations and discussions. I found Einar Solbu’s keynote particularly interesting. He made three main points:

  • Quality is depending on culture.
  • In music there are many quality layers. Evaluations of parts/single layers are not of much interest.
  • The ability of judging quality has to be developed and maintanied by means or rehearsing.

Here’s some random notes from the discussion:

  • According to Tolstoi a good art work will be infectious. (I found the text it was cited from here)
  • A technical dictionary describes quality as an attribute.
  • “each art work requires a proper science of its own”
  • how is it positioned what is the context?
  • do it achieve its intentions?
  • As related to judging the result of the fellowship projects: Are they at the front of their respective fields?
  • “art is transnational politcs are international”
