Robert Morris

April 7, 2006

Morris_mirrored_cubesSome quotes by Robert Morris currently tickling my brain (sited from Site-specific art: Performance place and documentation by Nick Kaye):

Real space cannot be experiences except in real time.

Our encounter with objects in space forces us to reflect on our selves which can never become “other” which can never become objects for our external examination. In the domain of real space the subject-object dilemma can never be resolved.

It was a confrontation with the body. It was the notion that the object recedes in its self-importance. It participates in a complex experience that includes the object your body the space and the time of your experience. It’s locked together in these things.

Oil solves global warming

April 9, 2006

One week ago in Norway one of the world’s very richest countries
the Yes Men posed as investigative reporters at a journalism
conference and revealed their “discovery” that Norway far from being
enviro-friendly as everyone believes is probably the world’s largest
agent of climate change per capita. This is because (a) Norway is the
world’s third largest petroleum exporter and (b) Norway invests the
billions it makes from petroleum in a wide range of oil automobile
airplane shipping and defense companies via its massive “Petroleum
Fund.” (While Norway’s aid to Pakistan investments in ecological
measures and support of the Nobel Peace Prize are much better known
they are much smaller than its aid to Shell Chevron Exxon
Halliburton etc. via the Fund.)

The journalists were dumbfounded at the April Fools’ talk. When the
truth came out that the “investigators” were phony many of the
journalists did express surprise that the hypocrisy of a supposedly
“green” country being so heavily invested in oil pollution and war
had not received more attention.

The 2006 edition of Sonorities focuses on the theme of
composer/performer. This festival presents a profile of international
artists who propose alternatives to the traditional composer/performer
relationship and resist generic modes of dissemination in favour of
specific performance or presentation situations. A large number of
events take advantage of the unique Sonic Laboratory at the Sonic Arts
Research Centre Queen’s University/Belfast. The centre was officially
opened by Karlheinz Stockhausen during Sonorities 2004.000 The Sonic
Laboratory includes arrays of loudspeakers strategically located around
above and below the audience area. Audiences walk out onto a suspended
acoustically transparent floor and experience a multi-dimensional sound
world in the centre of a cube.

The performance program of Sonorities 2006 is complemented by talks by
composers and artists. This year’s festival includes the TWO THOUSAND +
SIX Symposium on performance in technology mediated environments
initiated by performer and theorist Franziska Schroeder. This symposium
is a one day event taking place on the 29th April and features keynote
speakers Susan Broadhurst (author of “Liminal Acts: A Critical Overview
of Contemporary Performance and Theory” “Digital Practices: A Critical
Overview and Neuroesthetic Approach to Performance and Technology” and
the forthcoming "Performance and Technology: Practices of Virtual
Embodiment and Interactivity) and Ben Watson (Wire contributor

Multichannel audio signals in Max

April 17, 2006

multicable

I recently go the idea of how to pack several audio signals into one multichannel signal or a multicable. It does not work well when transported into or out of the poly~ objects but for other tasks it is straight forward. We are contemplating the possibility of using this solution in Jamoma in order to reduce the number of audio signals that have to be passed from one module to the next but I believe there are still a few wrinckles that needs to be ironed out before making the decision. Anyway it won’t happen before we have finished of the 0.300 release.

Lately I have been working on a number of modules for dealing with ambisonic signals in Jamoma. These modules tend to have 4 9 or 16 inlets and/or outlets depending on what order of ambisonic signal we use. This might be the first place were we start using this solution.

The patch itself can be found below.

creative work online

April 21, 2006

According to jill “57% of online 12-19 year olds in the US have published their own creative work online according to a recent survey by Pew Internet. 19% of online teens remixed other people’s content and published their remix online. They remixed stuff. This is how the world works today. And we worry about plagiarism.”

I find this interestign in terms of creativity. When I was 12 punk was happening and the idea of DIY got me started making my own music in a band named muzak. If we could do it with two chords instead of three we used two and if we could do with one chord only even better (hey maybe that is where all the drones emerged from…).

My 10 year old son is using Paint to create one 64×64 pixel pokemon animation after the other commiting them to pokemon forums and getting comments and suggestions. He’s almost as addicted to the PC as i am. It’s fun watching.

The aphorism: may we have the courage to fail is balanced by the corollary: may we also have the courage to succeed. In-between the two is where the action takes place.

Severe setback for new building

April 30, 2006

Bergen National Academy of the Arts was supposed to move to new premises in 2009.000 Last spring an international architecture competition was held won by the Norwegian company Snøhetta. Recently the project hit problems as estimated costs had increased compared to the initial budget. Because of this the project was put on hold by the Ministry of Education and Research in March. Two days ago Statsbygg (The Directorate of Public Construction and Property) decided to cancel the project altogether and instead initiate a new competition. At the same time another major challenge for the project was getting closer to a solution the architectural plan for all of this area and the relationship between the KHIB and the surrounding buildings.

Snohetta_2
The estimated costs had increased by approx. 25% or 85 million NOK. Of course that is substantial but on the other hand: How much will the added rent of current premises for at least three more years add up to? And the costs of a new competition? Add to that expected increase of costs due to inflation etc. Building costs tend to increase much faster than average inflation. In the end: How much will really be saved due to the recent decision? What would be gained in terms of quality of the building architectual standards etc. by instead pushing forward? Statsbygg is arguing that when the cost increase compared to initial specifications the project has to be cancelled in order not to undermine the competition principle. In my opinion this is a consideration that should be dealt with a year ago when judging the different candidates. That is when estimatet price of the various alternatives should be critically reviewed. I would be very surprised if a new competition draw anywhere near the same international attention as last year.

Snohetta_3
Working at KHIB we experience at a day to day basis the limitations of the current situation. KHIB is scattered all over the town. Some of the departments are split over two or more buildings. The policy of the school is to encourage transdisipline collaboration within and between the departments. Both staff and students seem eager at this as well. However the distance from one builing to another severely limits to what degree staff and students from different departments accidentally meet and talk or take a cup of coffe on a day to day basis severely limiting the possibilities for informal networks to establish themselves across the departments. As a member of the IT comitee I also see first hand how expenses for computers software etc. increase because of limited possibilities of sharing resources across departments. Unless the decision on cancelling the Snøhetta project is reversed it will take at least three additional years before KHIB might be able to move to new fascilities.

Some politicians have reacted strongly against the decision most notable the parliament member Å got Valle of The Socialist Left Party and she has promissed to contact the Ministry of Education and Research over the weekend. The minister is from the same party so we have to cross fingers and hope that this will have some effect.
